Growing an avocado from the pit within is easy. I spent so many of my years judging the avocado because it was green, looked like pigeon poo, and just came off as plain ol' unattractive. Well! I changed my mind! As I have grown into an adult ,so have my tastes.( Never the onion though!)
I am no longer afraid to try new things... and I am addicted to avocados.
I always heard that you could grow an avacodo tree from the pit and wanted to give it a try seeing as I love to garden so much. After all there, can't be something I have not tried ;) Soooooo... last spring I saved the pit from the center of my avocado. Placing toothpicks into the pit on three sides and hovering it on top of a glass full of water I hoped it would grow. Actually I did this to about 6 of them... one had to grow!
I read online that if the pit cracked over night, that it was alive and should sprout.
Some of them did, some of them didnt... and I from the very beginning they battled with my cat named Mowgli. He gave this plant such a hard time! He would drink their water in the night and when I wasn't looking... he would sneak on the counter and sip just enough to deprive the pits from getting what they needed.
Mr. Google explained that it shouldnt take long to get a sprout growing, but for some reason this pit was especially slow in it's growing... probably because of the cat!
actually, I'm quite positive that was the matter.
Anywho, long story short the cat ate the leaves off this survivor 3 different times. After the 2nd time I covered it with a big decorative glass jar that I had. The 3rd time he ate the leaves I had the jar off for literally 5 minutes or so... went in the other room, came back and they were all done! To top it off, he chose my art studio to yack the leaves up in! nice Mowgli!
I love my avocado! I love it because of what it is, and because it also has an instinctual need to survive, recovering three times!! If you would like to grow your own avacodo do as I have explained and have fun.
1. Collect your pit and wipe clean.
2. Stick 3 -4 toothpicks into the pit just far enough to stick. Sit it atop a cup full to the brim with water and sit your avocado pit right in the water so most of it is covered.
3. Wait and watch
4. When you have a root and a sprout emerging give it a taller cup so you can get a larger root.
5. When sprout is about an inch high and has a leaf or two plant it in dirt. It needs the nutrients from the soil. Let the pit sit a little above the dirt.
Lastly, gaurd from your cat if you have one...
although mine is a one of a kind! he also likes baby food and tangerines ;)
Oh! and since this tree will not be pollinated it will not fruit. Unless you get it outside this summer where there are bees! then maybe just maybe!
Have a great day! find the strength like my little and brave avocado.

Good thing i live in texas! Better chancevof pollination :)
